About ACT
Twenty-five years of stories,
told by our neighbors.
Our Story
From a shared dream to a mountain institution
Artists Collaborative Theatre was officially incorporated in 2001, born from a simple conviction: the people of the mountains deserve great live theatre, and they're more than talented enough to make it themselves.
In 2008, that conviction became a building — a $500,000 black-box theater in Elkhorn City, funded largely through Coal Severance Tax dollars. Handicap-accessible, 100 seats, 5,000 square feet, and busy year-round with productions and community programming.
In early 2020, an electrical fire took the original building. It didn't take the theatre. The company kept performing, and in 2021 ACT began developing a second location in Elkhorn City — because a stage is a building, but a theatre is its people.

Our Mission
To create, promote, present, and advance cultural exposure to and training in the performing arts for area residents and visitors.
Our Vision
To become the theatrical arts destination of east Kentucky and southwest Virginia, nationally recognized for quality productions.
By the Numbers
A small town with a big season
Recognition
The most award-winning community theatre in Kentucky
ACT's productions have earned honors at the state, regional, and national level, and the company is a proud member of the American Association of Community Theatre. Just as important to us: ACT operates within budget and solvent, every single year — good stewardship of every dollar this community entrusts to us.
ACT Kids Company
Raising the next generation of mountain artists
The ACT Kids Company offers free educational arts programming for kids in grades K-12, meeting twice a year in spring and fall semesters. Classes run about an hour, and kids are welcome to join anytime — no experience needed. And our ACT Kidz touring troupe carries live theatre into area schools, reaching more than 2,000 students every semester.
Always FUN! Always FREE! Current schedules are posted in our Facebook group.
